Baltes Chosen Third Team Academic All-American@

2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America® Division III Women's Basketball Squads

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois Wesleyan senior Lexi Baltes has been elected to the third team of the 2013-14 Capital One Academic All-America ® Division III women's basketball squad, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced on Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Baltes is the 116th Illinois Wesleyan Academic All-American® since the program began in 1970, a total that is 17th among all participating colleges and universities. The complete list of IWU Academic All-Americans® is available here.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America® honors on more than 20,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

Baltes (St. Charles, Ill., East HS) has a 3.89 GPA double majoring in English and political science at Illinois Wesleyan. She is averaging 13.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and leads the 16-7 team in assists (98) and steals (67).
She currently ranks No. 39 in career scoring (684 points), 28th in rebounds (380) and ninth in assists (271) at IWU while her .809 free throw percentage (174 of 215) is third in IWU career records.
She had the first recorded triple-double in IWU women's history with 14 points, 16 rebounds and an IWU-record 13 assists in an overtime win vs. Howard Payne on Dec. 28.

Last week Baltes was one of 10 student-athletes named to the 2014 Allstate Women's Basketball Coaches Association Good Works Teams®, recognizing college players who have made a commitment to improving their communities and the lives of others.
She was named to the Academic All-District 7 team, is a SAAC member, president of the local chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and member of DRL. Working with her hometown church, Christ Community Church, she helped lead a high school mission trip to Nicaragua this summer and through Compassion International, Baltes also sponsors a child from Nicaragua.

Baltes is a Phi Beta Kappa Fellow, a member of Pi Sigma Alpha honorary and was the winner of the 2012 "Elite 89" award at the NCAA D-III women's final four round when the Titans won the national championship.

The Capital One Division III Academic All-America ® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2013-14 Division III Academic All-America ® teams program.

A public policy studies/philosophy major with a 3.88 grade point average, senior forward Richie Bonney of Hobart was selected as the winner of the Capital One Division III Academic All-America ® of the Year award for men's basketball. An exercise and sport science major with a perfect 4.00 G.P.A., Carthage's Stephanie Kuzmanic was the winner of the Capital One Division III Academic All-America® of the Year award for women's basketball.
