Shane Smith, who graduated from Illinois Wesleyan last spring, won a playoff to claim the championship of the Gateway Pro Tour "Tournament 5", held in Rio Verde, Ariz., from Feb. 26-28.
Smith, now playing out of Scottsdale, Ariz., won first place money of $16,160 as he posted a three-round total of 13-under par 203 on the 7,219-yard, par 72 Vista Verde course and defeated Nathan Tyler of Tucson, Ariz., in the playoff.
Smith had rounds of 67, 64 and 72.
For the Titans in 2012, Smith was a third team Ping Division III All-American as he tied for 54th in the NCAA national championships. His season average in 29 rounds was a team-best 74.1.
