Complete Results, Titan Open, Jan. 28
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's team finished first of 12 and the women's team was first of 11 at the Titan Open indoor track meet at the Shirk Center on Saturday (Jan. 28).
The IWU men amassed 152 points to outdistance Lincoln College (Ill.) with 130. Greenville College was third with 77 points, followed by Southern Illinois-Edwardsville with 57 and Maryville University with 54.
The Titan women's score was 173 points as Southern Illinois-Edwardsville was second with 70. Rounding out the top five teams were Olivet Nazarene with 66 points, Greenville College with 64.50 and Lincoln College (Ill.) with 51.50.
Six Illinois Wesleyan men earned first place finishes. Senior
Tyler Saunders took first in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.75 and junior
Kurt VanNess got first in the 3000 meter run with his time of 8:57.09.
Senior
Max Lustick got first in the mile run in 4:18.73 while junior
Kevin Kapolnek was second in 4:24.51.
IWU athletes claimed the top three spots in the pole vault, led by junior Daniel LaRocca at 15 feet and followed by senior
Steve Lessaris at 12 feet-11 3/4 inches and sophomore
Ryan Willett, also at 12 feet-11 3/4 inches.
The Titans also took 1-2 in the weight throw with senior
Steven Kirk placing first with a toss of 56 feet-1 inches and senior
Mick Horsch in second at 52 feet-3 1/4 inches.
Freshman
Jeff Toraason won the high jump at a height of 6 feet- 3/4 inches.
The women also had six first place finishers, led by senior
Gaby Johnson in the high jump with a top height of 5 feet-1 3/4 inches.
Freshman
Kelli Herlitz had a distance of 35 feet-6 1/2 inches to claim first in the triple jump.
Senior
Lauren Alpert turned in a time of 56.21 seconds to win the 400 meter dash and sophomore
Alexis Sampson was the winner of the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.62.
Freshman
Meagan DeSalvo's time of 19:50.36 was good for first place in the 5,000 meter run and Titans took first and second in the 3000 meter run with sophomore
Cassie Anderson in first (10:59.75) and freshman
Stephanie Modert in second (11:09.48).
The 4x400 relay team also got first with its time of 3:56.06.
Four other Titans earned second place finishes - freshman
Lexia Swope in the 55 with a time of 7.40 seconds; senior
Jessica Christy in the 200 (26.23 seconds); junior Katherine Flippo in the mile (5:30.35); and junior
Taylor Cordes in the 55 meter hurdles (9.00 seconds).
The Titan teams are at home again next weekend with the Keck Invitational on Saturday. The IWU seniors will be recognized in a ceremony prior to the meet at 11 a.m. at the Shirk Center indoor track.
