Illinois Wesleyan was an at-large selection to this year's tourney after making the championships the past three years as an automatic qualifier as a result of winning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament.

The previous high finish for an IWU men's golf team was a fifth place showing in the 2009 tournament. Illinois Wesleyan was 12th in 2008, 15th in 2010, and missed the cut in its first NCAA tournament appearance in 2007.

As a team, Illinois Wesleyan competed frequently in the NAIA District 20 tournament and was in the NAIA national meet in 1967 but missed the 36-hole cut.

IWU's Dan Stoerzbach played as an individual in the 1978, 1979 and 1980 NCAA Division III championships. He earned All-America honors for his 11th place finish in 1979 and placed 33rd in 1978 and 36th in 1980.
