Titan Men's Golf Roars Back to Win Springfield Tourney

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan golf team, led by freshman Kenny Wienckowski, won the Illinois Springfield Prairie Fire Invitational, played Oct. 2-3 at the Piper Glen Golf Course in Springfield.

Wienckowski was the tourney medalist after a final round 68 and finished at even par 144 (76-68) while senior teammate Shane Smith carded a 71 on Monday and finished one shot behind at 145 (74-71).

The Titans had a second day team score of 289, 12 shots lower than any other team on Monday, and finished with a two day total of 593, easily besting second place Quincy University with a 607 total. The host school, Illinois-Springfield, finished third with a 617 total and first day leader Wisconsin-Parkside ballooned to a second day score of 323 and finished with a 625 score.

Sophomore Austin Craig (75-73) and junior Stefan Johnson (71-77) also placed in the top 10 for IWU, tying for fourth with two day scores of 148.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team is in second place of nine in the Illinois Springfield Prairie Fire Invitational after day one on Sunday, Oct. 2 at the Piper Glen Golf Course in Springfield.

The Titans have a team score of 304 and trail Division II Wisconsin-Parkside (302) by two shots.

Aided by an ace, junior Stefan Johnson is in first place in the nine-team, 55-player event with a one-under par 71 after the first day. Johnson had his hole-in-one on the 215-yard 15th hole.

Senior Shane Smith is in a tie for third with an opening round 74 and sophomore Austin Craig, playing as an individual, carded a 75 and is in sixth. Freshman Kenny Wienckowski is also in the top 10, shooting a 76 and tied for seventh.

The tournament concludes on Monday, Oct. 3.
