Final 2010 Softball Statistics

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - For the third straight season, senior pitcher #Christy Engel# has been chosen as the "Most Valuable Player" for the 2009 Illinois Wesleyan softball team.

In other honors for the team that finished with a 33-16 record, freshman outfielder #Jaci Forsythe# (Manito, Ill. /Midwest Central HS) was chosen as the "Most Improved Player" and, for the third straight season, senior #Kelli Flahaven# (Streator, Ill./HS) earned the team's "Gwen Meyer" Spirit Award.

Engel (St. Charles, Ill./North) was 14-11 with a 1.87 earned run average for the Titans and finished her career as the school's all-time leader in wins (62), pitching appearances (111), games started as a pitcher (68), shutouts (16), innings pitched (598.1) and strikeouts (600).
Lost in her pitching accomplishments is the fact that Engel led the 2010 Titans with a .314 batting average and stole 11 of 13 bases.

Forsythe came on strong at season's end and batted .224 with four doubles and nine runs batted in.

The "Gwen Meyer Award" is given to the player who gives 100 percent, shows support of the team and is self-motivated. The award was established in 1986 to honor the memory of Meyer, IWU's most valuable softball player in 1984, who died of cancer.

Only four other Illinois Wesleyan softball teams have accomplished more than 33 wins – 2001 (39-14), 2003 (38-8), 2009 (37-6) and 1994 (34-9).
