BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - On the strength of two spring national championships, the Illinois Wesleyan athletic program finished fifth in the 2009-10 Division III Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, becoming the first school from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin to finish in the top 10 of the annual rankings.

The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of
Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 18 sports -- nine women's and nine men's.

The Titans finished with a combined yearlong total of 704.25 points, trailing only Williams (Mass.) with 1292.25, Amherst (Mass.) with 905.75, Washington University (Mo.) with 858.50 points and Middlebury (Vt.) with 751.

IWU received 100 points for both NCAA Division III championships in baseball and women's outdoor track. IWU also earned 51 points as the women's golf team placed 13th, 59.25 points from the men's golf team that tied for 15th, and 50 points as the softball team was 17th.

Illinois Wesleyan scored a winter sports combined total of 241 points and had a fall sports total of 103 points.

The final Division III spring standings were released June 23, in conjunction with the 2010 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup luncheon taking place at the NACDA Convention.
