MOLINE, Ill. - Junior righthander Jason Pankau threw a four-hitter and pitched six hitless innings as the Illinois Wesleyan baseball team edged Buena Vista, 2-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Central Regional on Wednesday, May 19, at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field in Moline, Ill.

The Titans, who improved to 24-20, will next play at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20, against No. 3-seed Ripon (24-16), who lost to Webster, 6-0. In Friday's other regional contest, Rose-Hulman scored a run in the 11th inning to beat North Central, 5-4.

Pankau, who walked no one and struck out six, improved to 9-2 with the win and allowed no hits from the third inning until an infield flyball that was lost in the sun in the ninth. The game ended as the Beavers left the tying run on third base.

The Titans got on the board in the first inning when, with two outs, senior first baseman Casey McIntosh homered to left field to put the Titans ahead, 1-0.

The Beavers (29-12) tied the game in the bottom of the first when, with one out, Michael Stephenson singled to center field and stole second. After a strikeout, Mike Hoffman singled to center field to score Stephenson.

The Titans took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when third baseman Jeff Grodecki reached on an infield single and freshman shortstop Zach Scott sent him to second on a sacrifice bunt. Catcher Mark McDermott then reached on an error by the third baseman and Grodecki came around to score the unearned run.

Buena Vista's Luke Probasco (8-2) allowed only six hits in the loss with one earned run and one strikeout while walking one.
