Illinois Wesleyan Run Ends in NCAA Softball Regional

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Illinois Wesleyan Titans lost 6-1 to St. Thomas in the NCAA Division III regional at Indianola, Iowa, on Sunday, May 16. IWU's season ends with a 33-16 record, the fifth highest win total in a season at the school.

Only four other Illinois Wesleyan softball teams have accomplished more than 33 wins – 2001 (39-14), 2003 (38-8), 2009 (37-6) and 1994 (34-9).

Senior pitcher Christy Engel, senior shortstop Allison Ward and junior first baseman Kris Lee were named to the all-tournament team. Ward and Lee were "at-large" selections.

On Sunday, the Titans were limited to four hits with two coming in the second inning when IWU scored its lone run. Junior leftfielder Jen Monaco led off with a double to right center. Freshman Sam Rubright pinch ran for Monaco and went to third on a wild pitch. Sophomore third baseman Kayla Mahoney reached on an error by the third baseman and freshman Katie Bruins struck out looking for the first out of the inning. Senior second baseman Lisa Narotsky then singled to right field to score Rubright and send Mahoney to second. Freshman centerfielder Stephanie Polich laid down a sacrifice bunt that sent Narotsky to second and Mahoney to third before senior Christy Engel struck out swinging to end the threat.

Engel (14-11) was the losing pitcher as she allowed three runs on three hits and walked three in three innings. Freshman Alyssa Vorel was touched for three runs on four hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings of relief work.
