Titan Men's Golf Tied for 15th in NCAA Nationals

The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team carded its lowest single day total and finished tied for 15th in the 2010 NCAA Division III men's golf championships, held at the Hershey Links Course in Hershey, Pa.

After a final day team score of 294, the Titans finished with a team score of 1217 (322-300-301-294) as the winning team was Methodist University with its team total of 1177. The Monarchs won by one shot over Guilford College (1178) and by four shots over Huntingdon College (1181).

Sophomore Dex Reese (81-72-81-70) shot a 2-under par 70 on the final day at the par 72, 6837-yard Hershey Links Course, the best score posted by an IWU player this week, and finished with a total of 304, good for a tie for 48th place.

Junior Ryan Dorner (80-74-75-73) shot a final round 73 and was IWU's low finisher with a score of 302, tied for 42nd place.

Senior Matt Wennmaker (78-76-79-76) carded a 76 on Friday and tied for 74th place with a 309 total.

Senior Doug Keller (83-81-73-79) finished with a 316 total and finished 96th while junior Jake Scott (90-78-74-75) tied for 97th with a 317 total.

In the individual race, Tain Lee of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges was the medalist with a 280 four-day score after carding a 2-under 70 on the final day. He was a winner by three shots over Mitchell Fedorka of LaVerne (283).

THIRD DAY RECAP
After the third round of the NCAA Division III men's golf championships, the Illinois Wesleyan Titans slipped to a tie for 19th place at the par 72, 6837-yard Hershey Links Course in Hershey, Pa.
After a third day team score of 301, the Titans have a team score of 923 (322-300-301) as the leading team is Methodist University with its team total of 884. Scores plummeted in the third round as temperatures climbed into the low 60s with no rain and light wind at the Hershey Links. A total of 24 players shot par or better in round three, and the 120 players averaged 75.58 strokes in the round.
Junior Ryan Dorner (80-74-75) shot a third day 75 and stands at 229, tied for 48th place. Senior Matt Wennmaker carded a 79 and is tied for 75th place with a three-day total of 233.
Sophomore Dex Reese (81-72-81) shot a third day 81 to have a total of 234 and is tied for 77th place.
Senior Doug Keller (83-81-73) had the Titans' low score of the day with a 73 and is tied for 91st with a three-day total of 237 and junior Jake Scott (90-78-74) is tied for 109th with a 242 total.
Methodist University shot a one-under-par 287 to take a five-stroke lead after three rounds of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The Monarchs led by two shots over Huntingdon College after two rounds, and added three shots to their advantage as the Hawks (889 overall) turned in a round of 290. Guilford College remains in third place with a three-day score of 895 after a round of 295 Thursday, while Oglethorpe University (897) climbed into fourth after posting the low team score of the round at 286.
In the individual standings, Tain Lee of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (210 overall) shot an even-par 72 and carries a five-stroke lead over Josh Schrader of Methodist into the final round. Schrader shot 68 in the third round and is at 215 through the first three days of the tournament.
Mitchell Fedorka of the University of La Verne birdied six straight holes to briefly take the lead at six-under-par, but closed his round with a triple bogey, double bogey, bogey and par to give the strokes back and finish with a 72 for the round. He is a one-over-par 216 through three days, tied with Trey Howell of Methodist who shot a 69 Thursday..
The 72-hole tournament concludes through Friday, May 14.

DAY TWO RECAP
At the midway point of the NCAA Division III men's golf championships, the Illinois Wesleyan Titans improved to a tie for 17th, up from 24th after day one, in Hershey, Pa.
After a second day team score of 300, the Titans have a team score of 622 (322-300) as the leading team is Methodist University with its team total of 597. IWU played its second round at the par 72, 6837-yard Hershey Links Course.
Sophomore Dex Reese (81-72) shot a second day even-par 72 to have a midway total of 153 and is tied for 43rd place. Senior Matt Wennmaker (78-76) and junior Ryan Dorner (80-74) are tied for 51st with scores of 154.
Senior Doug Keller (83-81) is tied for 144th with a two-day total of 164 and Jake Scott (90-78) is tied for 167th with a 168 total.
After day two, Tain Lee of Claremont Mudd Scripps is the individual leader with a score of 4-under par 138 after carding 69 both days. He has a six-shot edge over his nearest competitors, Mitchell Fedorka of LaVerne and Steven Strock of Hope.
The 72-hole tournament continues through Friday, May 14.

ALL-REGION SELECTIONS

Three Titans were named to the Division III PING All-Central Region Team, selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The IWU representatives were Ryan Dorner, Dex Reese, and Matt Wennmaker. A total of 72 players across six regions earned all-region honors for 2010.

DAY ONE RECAP
After the first day of the NCAA Division III men's golf championships, the Illinois Wesleyan Titans struggled to a tie for 24th place in Hershey, Pa.
The Titans have a team score of 322 as the leading team is Skidmore College with its team total of 295. IWU played its first round at the par 71, 6984-yard Hershey Country Club East Course. Tournament play got underway 80 minutes late due to a frost delay this morning.
After the first round, senior Matt Wennmaker is tied for 65th with an 7-over par 78. Junior Ryan Dorner shot a 9-over 80 and is tied for 93rd while sophomore Dex Reese is tied for 104th with his opening round 81.
Senior Doug Keller had an 83 and is tied for 134th place and junior Jake Scott shot a 90 and is tied for 182nd.
After day one, Tain Lee of Claremont Mudd Scripps is the individual leader with a score of 2-under par 69.
The 72-hole tournament continues through Friday, May 14.

PREVIEW STORY
The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team will play in its fourth consecutive NCAA Division III championships, being held May 11 to 14 at Hershey, Pa.
Playing in the tournament this year for IWU will be seniors Matt Wennmaker (Oregon, Ill., HS) and Doug Keller (Manteno, Ill./Bishop McNamara HS), juniors Ryan Dorner (Glenview, Ill., Glenbrook South HS) and Jake Scott (Galesburg, Ill., HS) and sophomore Dex Reese (Glenview, Ill., Glenbrook South HS).
Wennmaker will be making his third straight NCAA appearance while Dorner played in 2009 and Keller was on the 2007 and 2008 teams.

The Titans placed fifth in the 2009 championships at Port St. Lucie, Fla., finishing with a score of 1187 as Oglethorpe was the team champion (1164) and LaVerne was second (1168).
IWU's Bennett Blakeman tied for eighth place with a four-day total of 5-over 293. Mitchell Fedorka of LaVerne and Oglethorpe's Olafur Loftsson tied for first with scores of 3-under 285.
Dorner ended up in a 41st place tie with his 303 score and Wennmaker ended with a 316 and tied for 94th.
The Illinois Wesleyan men's golf team is in for the third straight year as an automatic qualifier as a result of winning the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament after making the NCAA tourney in 2007 for the first time as an at-large selection.
IWU finished 12th in the four-day event in 2008 in Braselton, Ga., and finished 27th after the second day of the 2007 championships but only the low 23 teams made the cut to participate in the final two days.
IWU's Dan Stoerzbach played as an individual in the 1978, 1979 and 1980 NCAA Division III championships. He earned All-America honors for his 11th place finish in 1979 and placed 33rd in 1978 and 36th in 1980.
As a team, IWU competed frequently in the NAIA District 20 tournament and was in the NAIA national meet in 1967 but missed the 36-hole cut.
