Titans Handle Franklin in NCAA First Round, 76-52

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Sophomore Olivia Lett had 19 points and senior Christina Solari scored 17 and got 14 rebounds as Illinois Wesleyan downed Franklin, 76-52, in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Friday, March 5 at the Shirk Center.

The Titans, 27-1, will play Simpson (23-5) at 7 p.m. on Saturday for the chance to advance to the sectional round. Simpson was a 66-53 winner over Chicago earlier Friday.

Junior Stacey Arlis added 17 points for IWU, who scored 39 points off turnovers and, behind Lett, saw their bench outscore Franklin's, 23-7.

Illinois Wesleyan shot just 36 percent from the field in the game (23 of 63) and made five of 18 from the 3-point zone (.278). The Titans  forced 28 Grizzlies' turnovers while committing 19 and IWU held a commanding 45-31 edge in rebounds. The Grizzlies shot .408 from the floor (20 of 49) and mad six of 14 3-pointers (.429).

Sarah Condra had 19 points and Brittney Wilson scored 10 for Franklin, whose season ends with a 22-6 record.

In the earlier game, Ali Sokol came off the bench to score 18 points for Simpson while Stacey Schutjer and Amy Hamilton each scored 10. Simpson shot .370 in the contest (20 of 54) and was outrebounded, 51-37, in the game. The Storm, who led 31-28 at the half, scored 25 points in the paint. and led by as many as 14 with 13:10 to play in the game.
