Women 3rd, Men 4th in CCIW Swim Championships

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan women's swimming and diving team finished in third place and the men's team placed fourth at the three-day 2010 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championships conducted at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis.

Day Three Recap - Final Results

The Illinois Wesleyan women's swimming and diving team finished third with 665 points, trailing Wheaton, who won with 816, and Carthage, who finished with 813. It is Wheaton's 13th straight CCIW championship.
The Titan men accumulated 467.5 points, behind champion Carthage College (1018.5), Wheaton (777.5) and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (539). For  the Carthage men, it is their third title in a row and fourth in the last five years.

Illinois Wesleyan senior Michael Kozak (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) was chosen as the male outstanding participant of the meet while On Saturday Kozak won the men's 200 butterfly title with a time of 1:50.87 and on Friday he defended his title in the men's 100 butterfly, finishing with a time of 50.42 seconds.

In addition, Illinois Wesleyan's Melissa Graffy (Naperville, Ill./Central) earned at-large all-conference distinction.

Carthage had a sweep of other top honors - Amanda Croix and Nathan Ripley were named the Most Valuable women's and men's swimmers, respectively. Michelle Pelka earned the outstanding participant of the meet distinction for the women while coaches Beth DeLaRosby and Greg Earhart won female and male CCIW Coach of the Year honors. 

Illinois Wesleyan's Chris Betzle (East Moline, Ill./United) won the men's 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:15.05 and sophomore Andrea Peterson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) was champion in the women's 200 backstroke, finishing with a time of 2:06.70.

Mike Firth (East Moline, Ill./United) finished second in the 200 backstroke with his time of 1:54.24 and freshman Katie McHugh (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) got second in the 200 butterfly with a mark of 2:08.09.

Day Two Recap - Day Two Results

The Wheaton Thunder women are currently in first with a score of 561, followed by Carthage (537), Illinois Wesleyan (418), Augustana (189), Rose-Hulman (174), North Central (161) and Millikin (146).
On the men's side, the Carthage Red Men lead with a team score of 691.5, followed by Wheaton (504.5), Illinois Wesleyan (321.5), Rose-Hulman (312), Augustana (154.5) and Millikin (132).
Freshman Katie McHugh (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) picked up Illinois Wesleyan's first individual title on the night, winning the women's 100 butterfly with a CCIW championship record time of 56.96 seconds. Illinois Wesleyan senior Michael Kozak (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) defended his title in the men's 100 butterfly, finishing with a time of 50.42 seconds.
Illinois Wesleyan's Angela Lugg (Woodbury, Minn./H.S.) finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:53.73.
Sophomore Andrea Peterson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) was second in the 100 backstroke with her time of 58.82 seconds and the Titans' Mike Firth (East Moline, Ill./United) took home the men's 100 backstroke title (51.44).

Day One Recap - Day One Results

After the first day (10 events) the IWU men's team is in third place with 157.5 points, trailing Carthage (290.5) and Wheaton (208.5). The women's team rests in third place with 171 points, behind only Wheaton (268) and Carthage (247).
Illinois Wesleyan's Angela Lugg (Woodbury, Minn./H.S.) was second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:08.13 and, on the men's side. Chris Betzle (East Moline, Ill./United) was second in the 500 freestyle with his time of 4:43.39.
In the 200 individual medley, IWU claimed second place in both the women's and men's finals - freshman Katie McHugh (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) took second with her time of 2:10.97 and Tommy Gilbert (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) was second with his time of 1:57.08.
