The Illinois Wesleyan baseball team let a 6-0 lead get away and lost a 9-8 decision to Blackburn on May 5 at Horenberger Field.
With a 1-0 lead, Illinois Wesleyan went ahead 6-0 when it scored five in the fourth when
Mike Morrissey doubled to center field,
Kraig Ladd reached on an error by the shortstop and
Kevin Goshorn singled to left to drive home Morrissey. After
Casey McIntosh grounded out, Ladd scored on a wild pitch and
Jeff Grodecki hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Goshorn. Tim Marzec#, who had three of IWU's 13 hits, then singled and stole second and went to third on a wild pitch.
Mark McDermott singled to right field, driving home Marzec.
Pat Kirchhofer pinch hit for
Bob Huppert and walked and McDermott scored on a base hit by
Brett Moore.
Blackburn took the lead 9-8 in the seventh when, with one out, Matt Spala walked and went to second on a throwing error by catcher Pat Garvey. Adam Cadle was hit by pitch and Josh Holman doubled home two runs, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Chad Cronin walked, Jason Steckel singled to left field to drive home Holman.
The Titans mounted a threat in the ninth when Moore led off with a double to leftfield but Morrissey grounded out, Ladd lined to rightfield and Goshorn popped out to the first baseman.
IWU falls to 23-14 with the loss and the Beavers improved to 14-19.
Geoff Page (0-2) was the losing hurler, allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings.
