Urban Second Team Academic All-American
Monica Urban
Monica Urban
Illinois Wesleyan senior outfielder Monica Urban has been elected to the second team of the ESPN: The Magazine Academic All-America college division softball squads.

Urban (Wheaton, North HS), who was a third team Academic All-American in 2008, graduated with a 3.92 grade-point average as an accounting major and is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honorary and the IWU Accounting Society.

This spring Urban was chosen as the co-“Player of the Year” in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and was a first team selection on the 2009 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III All-Region team.

For the 37-6 conference champion Titans this season, Urban batted .383 with five doubles, three triples and a homer. She stole 27 bases and finished her career as the school’s all-time leader in steals with 94 and batting average at .412.

To be considered for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® squads, players must be of at least sophomore standing, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 (of 4.0), and be a starter or first-line reserve. A voting board representing the 1,800 members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) chooses the teams.

The selection of Urban gives Illinois Wesleyan 111 Academic All-America berths since the program began, a total eclipsed by only eight other schools, including Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State, UCLA and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
