Cummings Wins CCIW Defensive Honor

Illinois Wesleyan sophomore defensive back #P.J. Cummings# has been chosen "Defensive Player of the Week" for football in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for his performance in a 20-17 win over Wheaton November 7.

Cummings, a product of Chicago Notre Dame High School, had a game-high 10 tackles, an interception in the end zone, and blocked a punt to lead the Titan defense. With Illinois Wesleyan leading only 12-10, the third quarter interception by Cummings ended a nine play, 51-yard drive that saw the Thunder advance to the Titans' 15-yard line before he picked off the pass.

Cummings, a business administration major, is the son of Mary and Pat Cummings of Chicago.

Cummings shared the defensive honor with North Central junior linebacker Joe Schneiderbauer. who tied a career-high with 11 tackles (10 solo) to lead North Central's defense in a 45-26 win over Augustana on Nov. 7.  He also finished with a career-best three tackles for loss in the win.

Millikin junior quarterback Luke Hockaday and Carthage kicker/punter Tyler Funk were named CCIW Football Players of the Week Monday.

Hockaday helped rally the Big Blue from 14 points down heading into the fourth quarter in a 36-34 triple overtime win over Elmhurst. Hockaday was 33-of-49 passing for 332 yards and three touchdowns. He also connected with Chris Hampton for the game-deciding two-point conversion pass, and was Millikin's leading rusher with 71 yards on 18 carries including a 59-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Funk kicked a school-record 52-yard field goal just before halftime in the Red Men's 55-24 win over North Park. He also converted a 36-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
