Illinois Wesleyan sophomore outside hitter
Gaby Johnson (Knoxville, Iowa, Chariton HS) was named College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin "Offensive Volleyball Player of the Week" on Oct. 6.
Johnson averaged 2.63 kills in 19 sets as the Titans went 2-3 for the week. Johnson had a .333 hitting percentage, seven service aces, 16 digs and 10 blocks for the week. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Barker Chevrolet Classic II at IWU over the weekend. She had 16 kills, three blocks and five digs in a 3-2 loss to Wisconsin-Platteville on Oct. 3. She then had 15 kills (.344 hitting percentage) and two service aces in a 3-1 loss to seventh-ranked Hope on Oct. 2. She had eight kills, four blocks and six digs in the Titans' 3-1 win against Millikin on Sept. 29.
North Park senior Jami-Leigh Newell was the CCIW "Defensive Player of the Week." She tallied a season-high 34 digs in North Park's four-game win over NCCAA power Moody Bible Institute, which came into the Oct. 1 match with a 20-1 record and a 10-match winning streak. Newell is averaging 24 digs per match over the last three matches and owns a team-best 5.7 digs per game. She also has a second-best 18 service aces.
